The story
This had to be in my collection, Mateus is a top top player and has a wonderful future in front of him. He played for Southampton during a very poor season after the club were promoted to the top flight the year before. The season started poorly and never really got going. The season ended with the Saints rooted to the bottom of the league with just 12 points. Mateus was a huge shining light that season and sadly we couldn't keep hold of him and he made a big move to West Ham. Mateus Fernandes, born on 10 July 2004, began his professional career at Sporting CP, making his first-team debut in 2022 before moving on loan to Estoril Praia for the 2023/24 season where he gained valuable top-flight experience. In August 2024, Fernandes joined Southampton, signing a five-year contract for £15 million. During the 2024/25 Premier League season, Southampton struggled significantly, finishing bottom of the league with just 12 points. Despite the team's difficulties, Fernandes made 46 appearances, scored four goals, and provided seven assists, standing out as a bright spot in a tough campaign. His performances attracted attention and in August 2025, West Ham United secured Fernandes' services for a fee reported to be over £40 million. During the 2025/26 season, he continued to impress at West Ham, contributing three goals and four assists in 38 league appearances. Then in July 2026, Tottenham Hotspur completed a club-record £85 million transfer to sign Fernandes from West Ham, marking a rapid rise in his career and demonstrating the high regard in which he is held.
